The Champ

The Champ, starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture of 1931.
The Champ     The Champ is about an aging alcoholic boxer and the care-provider of his eight year old son.

Andy "Champ" Purcell (Wallace Beery) struggles to keep custody of Dink (Jackie Cooper) from his former wife. Through a series of failures, both in the ring and outside of it, the Champ tells Dink that he no longer loves him and that he would be better off with his mother.

The final seen is a classic between father and son and made Jackie Cooper the first child star of the 1930's. The seen is repeated in the 1979 remake with Jon Voight as The Champ and Ricky Schroder as T.J. (Dink).
Ricky Schroder won the Golden Globe Award for "Best New Male Star of the Year in a Motion Picture" at age nine for his performance.
